Skill #1: Writing

Writing is an art form all on its own, but there are 3 key writing styles to learn and perfect...

"How To" Content

This type of content requires explaining an idea or thought clearly and concisely — especially when it comes to selling your products and services or publishing high-quality blog posts.

So, how or where do you start?

Well, it's best to use content patterns, which allow you to stay consistent in your thought process and explanation of ideas throughout your post or page.

Using a content pattern is simple:

  • Choose one content pattern (such as a 'pros & cons' list followed by some action points)
  • Then repeat that pattern over and over again.

Thrive Themes CEO, Shane Melaugh, published a helpful video post about various types of content patterns you can check out here. Give it a read or a watch:

Storytelling

Great storytelling comes with an opportunity to capture people's attention and draw them further into your story (i.e. your sales pitch, lesson, sign-up, etc.).

If you're interested in learning how to become better at storytelling, read Donald Miller's book "Building A Story Brand".

Copywriting

This is also referred to as 'persuasive writing'.

It’s writing about a service or product you hope to sell online, but in a way that is informative, entertaining — and most importantly — persuasive. It's about convincing your page visitors to take action, whether that's placing an order, signing up to your newsletter or attending your upcoming webinar.

As an entrepreneur, you must become convincing.

Skill #2: Deep Work

This term was coined by Cal Newport, in his book titled… you guessed it... Deep Work.

Cal Newport's book Deep Work.

Deep Work means ...

“Professional activity performed in a state of distraction-free concentration that push your cognitive capabilities to their limit. These efforts create new value, improve your skill, and are hard to replicate.”

Why is Deep Work so important?

Because in the modern day, distractions are lurking around every corner.

This is how we not only lose focus on the things we need to accomplish, but valuable time to get them done. Thus, the reason for and importance of cultivating Deep Work habits.

If you'd like to develop strong Deep Work habits of your own, we recommend taking Shane Melaugh's free masterclass "90 Heroic Minutes".

Skill #3: Curiosity and the Ability to Document

This skill is broken down into 3 parts:

  1. Finding something of value or interest (i.e. an advert, a striking headline, a thought-provoking graphic)...

  2. Documenting it (screenshooting or penciling it into your notebook), and...

  3. Filing it away for future purposes.

The reason why this is so important and helpful is because coming up with your own ideas from scratch isn't always so easy. This is the skill of creating a swipe file.

"What is a swipe file" you ask?

It's basically a scrapbook (digital or physical) that you fill with all the great marketing ideas you come across.

Creating a swipe file reference can help you tremendously whenever you need to generate new ideas, come up with new blog article topics or even make changes to your landing pages in need of an upgrade.

Skill #4: Ship & Improve

This is both a cultivated skill as well as a conscious decision to push your creations out into the world.

Good enough really is good enough and, by constantly getting] feedback from your audience and customers, you'll be able to consistently tweak and improve your work.

Have you ever come across this quote?

"Don't aim for perfection. Aim for 'better than yesterday'."

- Izey 'Victoria' Odiase -

Remember, as an online entrepreneur, you're the only one who can push yourself. That's why getting into the habit sidestepping perfectionism in favor of shipping is so important.

And the act of incrementally improving your work is equally as important as it is to ship it.
